Colony: A country or region that is exploited and governed by another country

Imperialism: A system in which country imposes its rule over another country or region

Metropole: The parent of a colony

Protectorate: A territory that, following colonial occupation, maintained an indigenous government regulated by the metropole

The imperialism of the 19th century was characterised by constant wars. The clash of interests between rival powers due to the partition of Africa resulted in the Berlin Conference (1855). This established the rules for dividing the territory and the areas that each power would occupy


- Monopoly: The exclusive rights of companies to sell a product

- Cartel: Association of companies that control prices and production

- Holding: Financial group that invests capital

- Trust: Company merger in the same field that creates a single company
