UNIFICATION OF ITALY: It was a political process based in nationalism that started when Victor Emmanuel II, king of Piedmont Sardinia, incorporated Lombardy after defeating Austria in 1859. In 1860 Garibaldi conquered the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Kingdom of Italy was founded in 1861. It was a limited monarchy with censitary suffrage, being its prime minister Cavour. Complete unity was finally achieved with the annexation of Venice in 1866 and the conquest of the Papal States in 1870.
UNIFICATION OF GERMANY: It was a political process based in nationalism that started when Prussia defeated Austria in the Battle of Sadowa in 1866, allowing the northern German states to unify. Prussia then defeated France in the Battle of Sedan in 1870, incorporating Alsace and Lorraine, thereby unifying the southern German states. The Second Reich or German Empire began in 1871. Germany created a constitution that established universal male suffrage and a federal political system. The emperor was William I and the Chancellor was Otto von Bismarck, a great strategist that devised all the unification process from the very beginning.
