COLD WARIn 1949 after the lifted of the blockade, the Western nations plus Canada and the USA decided to create a treaty to backup each other in case of emergency. They created the NATO, a military alliance that is still on. In this year, the soviets exploded their first atomic bomb.

Through the forties and the fifties USA felt the fear of Communism, and it was showed as the Red Scare. Espionage was on the rise, the Rosenberg were executed because they revealed the secrets of the atomic bomb. Senator McCarthy headed the witch hunt, a campaign againstpeople accused of helping or supporting communists

The Korean WarIn 1945 Soviets and Americans troops occupied the peninsula, ruled by Japan since 1910. In North Korea, indigenous Marxists took control with Soviet assistance and began to t organize a totalitarian state.

In South Korea, ann american general, John R.Hodge, began to establish defense forces and police and to move toward a separate administration. He permitted the return of the nationalist leader.

Between October 1949 and June 1950 thousands of soldiers were killed in border incidents.

On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary  between the north and the south.

This invasion was the first military action of the Cold War.

By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. As far as American officials were concerned, it was a war against the forces of international communism itself. After some early back-and-forth across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted with nothing to show for them. Meanwhile, American officials worked anxiously to fashion some sort of armistice with the North Koreans. The alternative, they feared, would be a wider war with Russia and China–or even, as some warned, World War III.
