Time

In 1898 starts the presidency of Manuel Estrada Cabrera. This put the country into an authoritarian regime is accused of cruelty to the peasant classes and estates to foreigners have delivered for export. He was overthrown in 1920. Thus, the author in the play, tells of the cruelties that corrupt dictator did to the people of his village.

Migel Angel Asturias

Novelist and poet of magical realism , influenced originally by the realism, very soon, without giving up the mark, is entering his chosen field: Aboriginal mythology, the earth itself (the telluric, very current in terms) in the sense of commitment to the travails of peasants under the colonial yoke, which is already in the titles of their works. Along with that, and no less important aspect, quality and sounds of his prose only be compared in Castilian literature twentieth century .

Post Legends of Guatemala (1930) about myths and legends native and mestizo. In his famous novel The President (1946) portrays, as did Valle Inclan in El Tirano Banderas , García Márquez in The Autumn of the Patriarch , Roa Bastos in I the Supreme , who recently joined Vargas Llosa with the party goat - a typical Latin American dictator, for which he used procedures grotesque and burlesque, to describe the brutality and forcefulness total social oppression in their own country by dictatorial governments. For the composer José Castañeda wrote the librettos of the operasLipolidón emulate and images of birth .

Men of maize (1949) is recognized by many as his masterpiece. Typical novel of magical realism, is also seen in the same voices and faces of shame and injustice, but in terms of harsh colonial exploitation. To do this, what stands out is that the author succeeds, almost supernatural, fit the language and rhythm of his prose to the characters portrayed, their fantastic beliefs, manners and customs atavistic.

The more moles and pus had was the nanny of Martin Horn, the newly born son of the chief Gaspar Ilóm. The more dots and more lice had. The Piojosa Grande, Nanny Ilóm Martin. In his lap hot griddle in their old rags so thin, her son slept in mud as something brand new and under coxpi, thin tissue cap covering his head and face so as not to do evil eye is encouraging to hear their noise of falling water in porous soil.

Women with children and men with women. Clarity and warmth of bonfire. Women clarity far and near in the shadows. The men near the clarity and away in the shade. All in the tumult of the flames in the fire of the warriors, fire of the war that will mourn the thorns.

Thus said the younger Indians with senile moving their heads in the bees. Or they said, without losing their rhythm of old: Before the first maguey rope was braided hair is braided women.
Men's corn

In the same vein are two of his major works: "Mulata de Tal" and "Three of four suns", in which the author incorporates into his novel anthropological knowledge about mythology Maya , by linking in a masterly way, by appealing a way of narrating strongly influenced by surrealism , seemingly exclusive world views of the pre-and post-colonial Guatemala. In these works, ancient Mayan gods unexpectedly recovered his place in the contemporary world, as in "Three of four suns" or are brutally replaced by new deities brought and enforced by the various imperial powers. In this process of metamorphosis and changes abound, as seen in "Mulata de Tal", a book of great style, complex and wonderful. This world is diverse and culturally rich syncretic, survives primarily in the language of the poor and the exploited, Asturian language drive, as said, with singular skill, allowing you to show us a world in a poetic phrase and try one of the excluded and the oppressed. The author refuses to accept the cultural and human genocide colonial reality seems to impose on its people, and reaffirms the vitality of the latter, facing a literary enterprise that puts as key players to those victims suffering under the yoke of imperialist domination, notwithstanding their situation, resist oppression, maintaining and playing in the toughest conditions its own identity.

He insisted on similar themes in his subsequent works, such as the controversial novel trilogy known as "The Trilogy of the banana republic" which is comprised of: Strong Wind (1950), The Green Pope (1954) and The eyes of the interred (1960).

The theater of Miguel Angel Asturias is less known, although abundant in the dissent and social criticism: Blackmail and Drydock, both from 1964.
