Nelly Dean (known formally as Ellen Dean) serves as the chief narrator of Wuthering Heights. A sensible, intelligent, and compassionate woman, she grew up essentially alongside Hindley and Catherine Earnshaw and is deeply involved in the story she tells.
Heathcliff is a hero in the sense that he is the main character or protagonist of the novel. He is not, however, a hero in the strictly tragic sense as Hamlet or in the exalted sense of a noble war hero. It probably looks more like the "Byronic hero", which became a literary element during the romantic era. This hero is not necessarily sympathetic, noble or kind.
